How I Gave All My Products to Google and “Forced” Them to Give Me Hundreds of Monthly Visitors…for FREE!

How I Gave All My Products to Google and "Forced" Them to Give Me Hundreds of Monthly Visitors...for FREE!
If you’re not already posting your entire product catalog on Google Base (now Google Merchant Center), you could be missing out on a huge amount of FREE traffic to your online store.
Google Base is basically Google’s way to compete with the eBay’s, Craigslist’s, and Shopzilla’s of the world by providing an easy-to-use and searchable index of products for sale. Google Base allows users to submit almost anything, ranging from products to services to events.
These listings are then displayed in Google One Box Results as well as Froogle results. Most people using Google have come across OneBox results, but probably didn’t even realize it. OneBox results are normally only displayed for hard good type products at this point in time, and are actually displayed above the organic search results or on the immediate right side at the top of the PAID listings.
Ultimately, Google Base is a very powerful tool that most people probably aren’t taking advantage of when it comes to selling their eCommerce store’s products or services.
Finally, I have noticed through my testing that Google Base appears to be (currently) much more optimized for products vs services, but this could change in the near future. If you try typing in a service, Google won’t typically display OneBox results, but rather local business results.
Google will display the top three OneBox results for any given keyword you type in, so as you may imagine there is competition for a top three spot. You can view these OneBox results yourself by typing a product type into Google; try “running shorts”.

Typical Google OneBox Results from Google Base
In the future, it looks as though Google plans for its OneBox results to be commonly displayed for services, events, activities, jobs, etc. I can only imagine that the opportunities on Google Base will grow as this service becomes more popular, especially for categories other than products. Once you begin listing your products on Google Base, you will soon be wondering how to get your OneBox listings into a top three spot, and we’ll discuss that in a forthcoming article..
